Sawyer Dissertation Fellowship on Humanitarianisms and World Orders
Deadline
March 1, 2007
Background
The Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change, the Institute for Global Studies, the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the Department of Political Science are pleased to announce two doctoral dissertation fellowships, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, on the subject of humanitarianisms and world orders. These dissertation fellowships are to be part of a Sawyer Seminar that will undertake an investigation of various themes related to the question of humanitarianism in ethical, historical, and global perspectives. More information on the Sawyer Seminar can be found at www.hhh.umn.edu/humanitarianisms.
Fellowship Amount
The award includes a stipend of $20,000 for the academic year beginning September 2007, tuition for up to 14 thesis credits each semester, and subsidized health insurance through the graduate assistance plan. Because Sawyer Fellows are expected to make considerable progress on their dissertations and help organize the Sawyer Seminar they may not take research or teaching assistantship positions at the University during the period of the fellowship.
Eligibility
Students currently registered in the University of Minnesota Graduate School who have finished all requirements leading up to their dissertation are encouraged to apply. The award is open to those students whose work addresses aspects of research on humanitarianisms and world orders. The disciplinary field and methodological approach is open. Fellowship recipients are expected to be in residence throughout the academic year, 2007-08, in order to participate regularly in the Sawyer Seminar.
Application Procedure
Fellowship applicants should submit the following materials for consideration:
- Three-page proposal that outlines the dissertation topic and its relationship to humanitarianisms and world orders
- Curriculum vitae
