Global Studies Major
Global Studies students choose 1 theme and 1 region of concentration. These concentrations are combined with Global Studies “core courses”, experiential learning, language study, and a major project to provide a solid basis for understanding Global processes, cultures and issues. The major is comprised of 11 or more courses, totaling a minimum of 35 upper-division credits (not including language instruction) taken on an A-F grading basis, and completed with a C- or better.

Experiential Learning Requirement
Global Studies students are required to participate in study abroad (6 weeks or longer), an internship (100 or more hours), or the Foreign Language Immersion Program (FLIP). Internships must be approved by the advisor and should be related to the students theme and/or region. More information is available in the Global Studies Student Handbook (PDF), or by e-mailing a Global Studies Advisor.
For study abroad resources from the Learning Abroad Center (LAC) specifically geared toward Global Studies majors, see their Study Abroad in Global Studies advising sheet.
Language Requirement
Each student must complete 4 semesters of a foreign language that is associated with the student’s region of concentration. Courses that have been "tested out of" or native speaking ability cannot fulfill this requirement.
Major Project Requirement
The Major Project provides students the opportunity to focus the ideas, critical perspectives and knowledge from courses and experiences within the major to deepen research, analytic and writing abilities. The project is generally a research paper of 5000-7500 words (25-35 pages), but students have also done special projects, art exhibits and other creative initiatives. Students can fulfill this requirement by taking Glos 3981W, 3550V (honors), or by a Directed Study. E-mail a Global Studies Advisor if you have questions.
